World Lions, get together at Busan!

At Lions Clubs’ convention, 55,000 volunteers from 120 countries flock to port city

The members of Lions Clubs are gathering in Busan from June 22 to 26 for the 95th Lions Clubs International Convention. As of May, 50,000 members have pre-registered, and another 5,000 are expected to register on site.

With 1.35 million members from 45,000 clubs in 208 countries, Lions Clubs are the world’s largest volunteer group. Since the club was founded in 1917, it has been reaching out through social volunteer activities concentrating on service to the blind and prevention of eye disease.

The Busan Convention will start with on-site registration. On the second day a parade, seminars, international show, opening ceremony and the 2nd general meeting will take place. On the last day, June 26, the election and closing ceremony are scheduled and the festival of the world’s Lions will close. Busan is already well prepared to host the Lions Clubs Convention. Within BEXCO a total situation room will be set up to ensure a smooth convention. Transportation plans have been prepared for the International Parade and from hotel to the venue. The city is also ensuring there will be enough accommodations. Busan City has also set up a medical room in BEXCO and designated hospitals for emergency patients.

This year’s convention is a good chance for the participants to enjoy the beautiful port city of Busan, which sports fantastic natural scenery. The participants will be able to experience the outstanding natural scenery of Busan, beautiful night view of Gwangan Bridge, world level convention center, Korea’s traditional culture and fresh seafood and Centum City, the world’s largest shopping mall and casino. Nearby is one of Unesco’s seven global geoparks, the volcanic Jeju Island. Furthermore, since the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea is taking place during the convention period, the visitors can enjoy a wide range of events and experience other than the Lions programs.
